Sheryl was in her bedroom when Gage arrived, and she stayed there, needing him to have a moment to talk with his friends about what had happened. In the end, she was fine. So sheâd ridden in the back of a van for five or six minutesâthe total time from the inn to her beach cottage. Sheâd never been in any real danger.
She unlocked the door at the same time someone knocked on it, so she opened it almost immediately. Gage stood there, his features dark and stormy. Maybe his friends had done her a favor, because wow, he was sexy when he was angry.
âAre you okay?â he asked.
âYes.â
He visibly softened, but she wasnât done with him yet. âIs it really your birthday?â
âYes.â He ducked his head then.
âWhy didnât you tell me?â She put her hand on his chest, feeling the warmth from his body against her palm. His pulse beat steadily, and she realized how attached to him she was. And she barely knew him.
In that moment, everything became crystal clear, and she fell back a step. âYou should go celebrate with the people who love you.â Sheryl hated how the words sounded, but she couldnât change them or pull them back in.
Gage blinked, surprise mixing with the fading fury. âDoes that include you?â
âI donât know, Gage,â she said. âYou didnât even tell me it was your birthday.â
âI was going to. Tonight. While we drifted in that hammock, and I fell more in love with you.â
She heard what he said, but she didnât know what to do with it. âThis feels fast,â she said.
âIt is fast.â He looked down the hall and then back at her. âPlease come eat. I got that barbecue you like, with all that coleslaw. Nobody else will eat the stuff. And if you want to break up with me tomorrow, fine. But itâs my birthday, so you canât break up with me today.â
Despite her mood, a smile sprang to her face. âIs that a rule?â
âYes,â he said simply. âYou donât have a present for me, do you?â
Sadness hit her, and she shook her head. âI wouldâve gotten you one, had I known.â
âYouâre my gift,â he said, reaching for her. Somehow, heâd managed to turn the moment sweet and romantic with just three words. âPlease come eat with us.â
She moved forward when he tugged, and he added, âI can introduce you to them properly.â
âAll right,â she said. âBut after everyone leaves, you have a lot of explaining to do.â
âDeal,â he said, pressing his lips to her forehead. Sheryl tried not to press into his touch. Tried, and failed, revealing that sheâd started to fall for him too.
But that didnât mean she was happy with his choices.
